For those of you who do not know what split testing is, split testing is where we create two copies of our webpage and then we alter one element of the site and see if it increases or decreases our responsiveness of our offer. A different headline, a different color, a different price, a different guarantee... If the change increases sales, the new site is now our control model. If it decreases sales, then we simply revert back to the original site and then test something else. Right? The reason you can only make one change is to make it easy to decipher exactly what caused the increase or decrease in our offer. If we make multiple changes, then we will not know exactly what worked or or more importantly, what didn't work. Although this has been the defacto standard for may years, split-testing alone can leave you scratching your head trying to figure out "why" people have response more favorably... or else you have to wait, and wait, and test, and wait some more. It's limiting. That's why there are some inherent problems with the standard split-testing model everyone has been using. For example...
Don't get me wrong... Split Testing has made my company and many others a huge sum of money over the years. Times change and technology and methods change as well. Everyone's Talking About "The Taguchi Method," But... Is It Really For Internet Marketers Though? I know it sounds almost like some kind of disease, but I have to say it's really pure genius the way it works. Here it is plain and simple... the "Taguchi Method" is a simple way to test multiple variables all at the same time. Here's an easy-to-understand example. Let's say you are want to test your headline, your opening sentence, 3 subheads and your order button. That's 6 different variables. If you run split tests, you need to create a minimum of 12 different versions of the website, plus... Here's the kicker: You don't know if each winning variable will work together. What I mean is, what if headline #1 and subhead #1 and opening sentence #1 when used together on the same sales letter actually produces LESS SALES!?! Here's an example:
Look at this scenario. You can test 2 headlines. And let's say headline #1 wins. Then you go on and test, say, lead copy (the introduction), body copy, background color, etc. But the big question is, "What if..." Like, what if the winner in a subsequent test would OUTSELL with headline #2 instead? You see, the winner in one test can actually outpull when combined with the LOSER from another test! But the problem is, you don't know. This is where Taguchi comes in... Taguchi can test these at the same time, but it wasn't designed for this. It was designed for the manufacturing industry as a better estimation tool. It's not perfect but certainly more cost effective than running 144 different tests for 12 different variables. It's NOT meant for Internet Businesses... So We Fixed It! Now, Taguchi has been since "mutated" to work online and some software programs now exist that do that. But a HUGE problem still remains... it's still limited by the way Taguchi "calculates" because, online (as opposed to offline), there are so many permutations and variables, and results can happen relatively quickly. (Unlike direct mail, where you can send a sales letter to a small list, wait for the mail to go through, wait for the orders to come in and then "calculate" the results, online things happen lightning fast!) Plus, all Taguchi software on the market right now are not meant for Internet marketers, and especially for long copy salesletters and whole websites -- they are only best used with banners, ads, small web pages and PPC ads. Sure, they can be used with long copy sales letters. But it's way too laborious because you still have to MANUALLY test, track and tweak your sales letters and ads. By hand! Some software will do one or two of the three. But not all three. You have to buy multiple software programs, and spend 2 to 3 times as much time on learning the new software, using the software and working the results together, and waiting 2-3 times as long for anything decent you can work with...
