The response mechanism for each version is given a unique tracking code -
such as a different department or suite number in the address - so each response
can be traced to its source.
After the campaign, responses are tallied and compared. The winner becomes
the "control" which future test ads compete against, until another
beats it.
Split run testing is also used in direct mail. A mailing list is divided into
two or more identical segments, a different version of a mailing piece is sent
to each, and responses are tallied and compared. The piece that generates the
most overall profit wins.
Although offline split run testing is costly, done properly it
dramatically increases response and profits.
